When was the last time you went rock climbing, and took the great jump off a cliff and found your self in the middle of a thrilling race of life or death. (hum lets see was 1993,1999, 0r 2004 with Sylvester Stallone.) What about the last time you came in and swept you wife completely off here feet with a romantic evening. I will tell you “I come from a long line of stubborn idiots.” Because the more I ramble around in my head I realize is spend more time on my duff in front of the boob tube watching her live out her romantic dreams from You’ve got Mail or Return to me.
Yet I am “no good at being noble, but it doesn’t take much to see that the problems of three little people don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you’ll understand that.” As I began to process this idea I did the unthinkable, and got alone with my Brain!!! It’s a scary place to be some times, just asks my wife. No, on second thought don’t she just might say “What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.” But just the same I was lost rambling around in my head thinking about the majority of conversations I have with my friends and students. “ What movie have you seen recently, really what did you think about it?” Who are you listening to these days,….” Well you get the gist. More times than not we are talking about the Corleone life and sleeping with the Fishes, and dreaming about the adventure life Mel Gibson’s can live out on our TV screen. As a youth pastor I spend countless hours reading and attempting to follow the culture of TV, Movies, and Music. Through what seems to be a wonderful exciting eventful job that allows me to work with students on a daily basis (thank you Lord), one thing I have found is the lack of adventure we have in our own life.
Erwin McManus says – we have gotten so good at watching life happen rather than living life. That if we want to be heroic we rent Brave heart, if we need a great adventure we watch Lord of the Rings.
What happens, is the reality that we are living this life, as we give our $8 dollars, and set in the safety of our seats and eat our popcorn and drink our diet coke. We have become a generation of MOVIE/MUSIC critics, and our life is often defined by the themes and lyrics of our contemporary counterparts. As we watch and listen they fill us with our quotes and often inspiration.
I will have to give props to a guy like my brother-in-law, boredom is not on his list, though he might watch a few to many movies… THIS guy has a life adventure, he willingly participates in stick fighting tournaments. Want to talk about something uncertain and dangerous that will pump your blood pressure.
What are you doing in this life, are you watching it go by on the big screen or are you living large. “GO BIG OR GO HOME” and watch a Movie.
