My Favorite Time of Day

Category: Family Blog

img_7641After dinner, after the dishes have been washed, right before EB’s bedtime - EB comes alive with laughter and fun, and DB, EB and I play and laugh.  THis is the best time of most days.

Unfortunately, there is one aspect of our nighttime routine that is failing.  EB does not like to be read to.  She loves to play with books, and look at them on her own, but if you start reading them, she gets really upset.  She takes the book out of your hands and crawls away.  If you try to force her to sit and be read to, she cries the whole time.  If I give her one book to look at while I read another, she wants the one I am reading.  Any ideas on what to do about this?

Why don’t you try waiting a few months and then try again. Let her play with the books now and learn to love books. You have plenty of time to read to her. You and DK were the same way, you just weren’t ready to sit and be read to. She’ll grow into it. You are such a wonderful mother. I’m so proud of you. EB is a lucky little girl.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it! As long as she likes to look at them on her own and play with them, she is having positive interactions with books, and that’s the goal. I wouldn’t be surprised if in a couple months she’s more than happy to have you read them to her - even asks you to do it! (As our girl now does, all the time!) In the meantime, you could try storytelling at night instead.

Hey, I requested to follow you on Twitter - are you still using Twitter?

    Hey,
Maybe both you guys read with excitment together and let EB see how you guys are enjoying it and she may want to join. It sounds like a strong personality already showing through!

Her daddy was the same way. He hated reading until about the sixth grade. Now look at him. We moved 45,000 books every time you changed houses.
